Role familySilicon Photonics Engineer

About the role

This role owns the move of photonic hardware from research into pilot and then high-volume manufacturing. The hardware includes photonic integrated circuit assemblies, precision fiber assemblies and cryogenic subassemblies. The engineer works with process, design, test, supply chain and operations teams to make these builds repeatable, high-yield and cost-effective.

What you'll do

  • Lead manufacturing process development for photonic integrated circuit hardware, fiber assemblies and opto-mechanical systems from prototype through pilot production.
  • Act as the manufacturing lead during new product introduction, turning research prototypes into production-ready processes.
  • Own fiber processes such as stripping, cleaving, fusion splicing, routing, connectorization, inspection and strain relief.
  • Develop optical packaging, precision alignment and electro-optical integration methods, plus tooling, fixtures and workstations.
  • Write work instructions, process flows, control plans, PFMEAs and validation plans, and run SPC, DOE and measurement system studies.
  • Drive yield, throughput and cost improvements, lead manufacturing readiness reviews and transfer mature processes to contract manufacturers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial or electrical engineering, physics or a related field.
  • 8+ years of manufacturing engineering on complex photonic, semiconductor, optical or other high-reliability products.
  • Track record of taking products from R&D through new product introduction, pilot builds and ramp.
  • Hands-on fiber stripping, cleaving, fusion splicing, inspection and connectorization experience.
  • Cleanroom manufacturing experience and experience preparing processes for contract manufacturer transfer.
  • Experience with process documentation, PFMEA, control plans, SPC, process validation and design for manufacturability.

Nice to have

  • Experience with silicon photonics, quantum technologies, optical communications or semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Experience with photonic integrated circuit packaging, fiber attach or active optical alignment.
  • Experience with automated optical inspection, production test or manufacturing automation.
  • Experience with cryogenic or vacuum hardware.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, CAPA and lean practices such as 5S.

Visa path

People in advanced photonics manufacturing roles often support an O-1A case with evidence such as patents, publications, documented process or yield impact, and a senior role with critical responsibility. The posting states no citizenship restriction. An employer like this, or a U.S. agent, can file the petition if the candidate's record meets the criteria. Approval depends on the individual evidence.
