About the role
This engineer builds AI-driven pipelines for designing photonic components, starting with layout. The aim is to shorten the design, fabrication and test loop for photonic chips used in large neutral-atom quantum computers. The work spans device design, simulation, layout and testing with foundry partners and quantum scientists.
What you'll do
- Lead tapeouts of high-performance photonic and optoelectronic components and circuits.
- Build and own AI-driven component development pipelines, starting with the layout pipeline.
- Work with foundry partners through design, fabrication and test cycles, using process design kit constraints and fab feedback to converge faster.
- Contribute across the photonics workflow, including device design, simulation, layout, test and system-level experiments.
- Integrate photonic components into full quantum computing systems alongside engineers and scientists.
Requirements
- Master's or PhD in electrical engineering, physics or a related field, or 4+ years of experience with photonic integrated circuits.
- Practical experience across the photonic integrated circuit workflow, from simulation and layout to experiments and control.
- Strong Python skills and a record of automating engineering work, including with AI tools.
- Interest in at least one of photonic design automation, large-scale layout, high-volume photonics testing or photonic systems control.
- Demonstrated technical impact through publications, patents or shipped products.
Nice to have
- Experience with simulation tools such as Lumerical or Tidy3D and layout tools such as gdsfactory, KLayout, gdspy or IPKISS.
- Applied machine learning for device design or layout, such as inverse design or Bayesian optimization.
- Direct experience with a specific foundry process design kit and its design rules.
- Experience with optical components for atomic physics, such as high-power light, acousto-optic or electro-optic modulator control, and beam delivery.
- Prior work in quantum computing, sensing or communication, or another physics-heavy hardware setting.

Visa path
Photonic integrated circuit engineers commonly support an O-1A case with publications, patents, shipped devices and evidence of original contributions to the field. The posting asks for proven technical impact, which matches that kind of evidence. It states no citizenship restriction. An employer like this, or a U.S. agent, can file the petition if the candidate's record supports it. Approval depends on the individual evidence.
