Role familyAutonomous Vehicle Perception & Planning Engineer

About the role

The systems engineering team sets performance standards for the vehicle's hardware and software and designs the tests that validate them. This role defines how quantitative safety risk is estimated for sensing and perception, including rare events with little operational data. Results feed architecture trade studies and expansion into new operating domains.

What you'll do

  • Define the quantitative safety-risk approach for sensing and perception, building on company-wide risk methodologies.
  • Build statistical models to evaluate end-to-end performance for current and hypothetical sensor suites.
  • Assess risk for rare situations such as pedestrian crowds, floods and degraded sensing in construction zones.
  • Prototype workflows that set required perception performance levels, support hardware and software trade studies, and estimate event exposure.
  • Work with onboard software, test engineering and system safety teams to map perception and planner evaluation to end-to-end risk.
  • Present complex quantitative findings and recommendations to senior leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in computer science, math, physics, engineering or a related field.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience delivering high-stakes technical roadmaps and business-critical systems.
  • Proficiency in vehicular robotics, Python or C++, statistical or predictive modeling, and experimental design and metrics.
  • Deep knowledge of at least two of: modern ML for perception, simulator-based risk estimation, or systems engineering and verification fundamentals.
  • Record of leading complex safety-critical projects with leadership-facing accountability.
  • Experience using AI productivity tools for analysis and workflow development.

Nice to have

  • Master's with thesis or PhD in machine learning, statistics, robotics or a related quantitative field.
  • Autonomous driving industry experience.
  • Experience testing on large-scale infrastructure and deploying safety-critical production systems.
  • Track record of model-driven metrics that influence design decisions at scale.

Visa path

Senior engineers in safety-critical autonomy often document an O-1A case with evidence of a critical role, high compensation, publications or technical standards work, and recognition from peers. The posting states no citizenship restriction. An employer like this or a U.S. agent can file the petition, and approval depends on the individual evidence.
