About the role
This role sits on a research, development and engineering modeling team that links material characterization, quantum chemistry and cell-level electrochemistry. The goal is to turn lab and simulation data into design rules for lithium-ion active materials and cells. The engineer works closely with synthesis, formulation and commercial teams to quantify how material properties drive performance.
What you'll do
- Use characterization methods such as BET, TGA, Raman, SEM, XAS, XPS and EPR together with DFT and electronic structure tools to relate material properties to electrochemical performance.
- Develop and run half-cell and full-cell electrochemical tests to extract kinetics and physics of lithium-ion active materials.
- Build and maintain automated data processing, simulation and modeling workflows in Linux, bash and Python.
- Turn computational findings into concrete material design changes for the synthesis and formulation teams.
- Advise internal teams and external customers on cell design choices that balance power and energy.
- Use historical empirical datasets to build model scenarios that guide energy-versus-power differentiation.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or a related physical science.
- Deep experience combining quantum chemistry methods such as DFT with experimental materials characterization.
- Deep experience developing and applying physics-based models for lithium-ion batteries.
- High proficiency with Linux, command-line tools, bash, Python and numerical solvers.
- Hands-on electrochemistry background for lithium-ion batteries or a related field.
- Solid grasp of standard and advanced spectroscopic or synchrotron techniques applied to silicon or carbon active materials.
