Role familyQuantum Software / Compiler Engineer

About the role

This role builds the software that orchestrates and controls a quantum hardware stack, from real-time control of lasers and FPGAs to configuration, diagnostics and feedback. The engineer works with physicists, systems architects and hardware engineers. The goal is precise, reliable and scalable quantum operations.

What you'll do

  • Design software for orchestrating quantum experiments, including pulse sequence generation, device coordination and real-time control.
  • Build APIs and middleware connecting hardware control layers such as FPGAs, DACs and timing systems to orchestration software and compilers.
  • Implement communication and synchronization protocols across embedded and distributed components.
  • Turn experimental requirements from physicists and architects into testable, high-performance features.
  • Contribute to diagnostic and calibration routines for hardware validation and performance monitoring.
  • Develop tooling for automation, test infrastructure, state management and logging, and take part in system bring-up and integration testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics or a related field.
  • At least 5 years developing software for hardware control, embedded systems or distributed systems.
  • Strong Python and/or C/C++ skills, with experience using hardware interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART and Ethernet.
  • Experience with real-time or hardware-in-the-loop control environments.
  • Familiarity with timing systems such as PTP and with communication stacks.
  • Proficiency in system integration, testing and performance tuning.

Nice to have

  • Experience with scientific instrumentation, lab automation or quantum hardware control.
  • Familiarity with FPGA systems, DAC/ADC control or pulse sequencing frameworks.
  • Exposure to embedded Linux, RTOS or custom firmware.
  • Knowledge of calibration, feedback or control loop algorithms.
  • Experience on multidisciplinary teams spanning hardware, software and science.

Visa path

Engineers in quantum control software often support an O-1A case with evidence such as published work, patents, open-source contributions, critical roles on technically significant systems, and a high salary relative to peers. The posting states no citizenship restriction. An employer like this or a U.S. agent can file the petition, and approval depends on the individual's evidence.
