About the role
This role builds a reusable platform that automates theoretical and computational research in quantum computing by generating hypotheses, running candidates and using evidence to guide further exploration. First uses include speeding up software repositories, discovering error-correction codes and searching compiler and architecture options. It is a hands-on engineering role with substantial technical ownership.
What you'll do
- Design and build the research-automation platform, including programmable search strategies, agent and tool integrations, and reliable long-running experiments.
- Develop and evaluate search and optimization methods for generating, selecting, refining and combining candidates under limited compute budgets.
- Work with theorists and compiler researchers to turn research questions into search spaces, constraints, objectives and executable evaluations.
- Build reproducible evidence of progress through correctness checks, strong baselines, noise-aware measurement and independent validation.
- Deliver concrete discoveries and software improvements from the platform.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering skills and a record of independently delivering substantial research or developer tools.
- Proficiency in Rust or a comparable systems language, plus scientific programming in Python.
- Deep practical experience in combinatorial optimization, evolutionary algorithms, meta-heuristics or automated algorithm design.
- Hands-on experience building automated discovery or optimization systems that generate candidates, run experiments and learn from feedback.
- Strong experimental judgment, including setting objectives, allocating evaluation budgets and separating real gains from noise.
Nice to have
- LLM-guided search, program synthesis or autonomous research systems.
- Quality-diversity methods, tree search, Bayesian optimization or bandit methods.
- Performance engineering, profiling and statistical handling of measurement noise.
- Compiler optimization, scheduling, routing or hardware-software architecture search.
- Quantum computing, error correction or fault-tolerant architectures.

Visa path
Engineers and researchers in this area typically support an O-1A with evidence such as publications, patents or open-source contributions, original contributions of major significance, judging or review work, and high compensation. The posting states no citizenship or work-authorization restriction. An employer like this, or a U.S. agent, can file an O-1 petition, though approval depends on the individual's record and is never assured.
