About the role
This leader runs the function that measures biophysical, biochemical and binding properties of protein therapeutics. The role covers established analytical methods and newer pooled, miniaturized and nanoscale assays that can keep pace with the volume of machine-learning-generated designs. The role exists to make sure measurement data is good enough to train models and decide which candidates advance.
What you'll do
- Set the multi-year scientific and organizational strategy for protein analytics, biophysics, developability and protein interaction measurement.
- Oversee conventional workflows such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, electrophoresis, thermal stability, light scattering and biosensor assays.
- Drive development of pooled, multiplexed, microfluidic and nanoscale assays that cut sample use and raise throughput.
- Set data standards, assay controls and quality expectations so high-throughput results can be used for model training and candidate triage.
- Work with prototyping, automation, data science, machine learning, protein sciences and CMC teams to scale new assay concepts into production.
- Build and mentor managers and senior scientists, and manage CRO, academic and vendor relationships.
Requirements
- PhD in biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioengineering, protein engineering or a related field, or equivalent industry depth.
- 12 or more years in biopharma, biotech or protein engineering, with substantial leadership of protein analytics, biophysics and developability.
- Track record of building or scaling novel assay platforms, especially miniaturized, pooled, multiplexed or barcode-enabled formats.
- Deep expertise in methods such as SEC, LC/MS, CE-SDS, cIEF, DSF, DSC, DLS, SEC-MALS, SPR and BLI.
- Strong grasp of affinity, kinetics, specificity and epitope binning, plus a quantitative approach to assay statistics.
- Experience leading leaders and influencing executives in a matrixed organization.
Nice to have
- Experience building platform capabilities for machine-learning-enabled discovery or closed-loop design-build-test-learn cycles.
- Experience with pooled screening, DNA-encoded or sequencing-based readouts, or display technologies.
- Experience with very low-input assays using microfluidics, acoustic dispensing or advanced imaging.
- Experience as an external scientific spokesperson or conference presenter.
