About the role
This role focuses on synthetic diagnostic models that link what experimental instruments measure with what simulations predict for field-reversed configuration plasmas. The aim is more accurate diagnostics and a better reading of plasma performance. In the first year the work centers on connecting these models to experimental and simulation data pipelines for faster, more reliable analysis.
What you'll do
- Develop and validate synthetic diagnostic models tying diagnostic signals to simulation output
- Build and validate ML frameworks for plasma dynamics using differentiable physics, PINNs, surrogate models or hybrid methods
- Integrate ML models with simulation tools and experimental diagnostic pipelines
- Reproduce experimental plasma conditions in modeling workflows to interpret magnetic diffusion, circuit response and measurements
- Write scripts to post-process results and visualize correlations between predictions and experiments
- Report findings to research stakeholders through documents, presentations and visualizations
Requirements
- PhD in physics, engineering, applied math, computational science, machine learning or a related field with a physics-grounded modeling emphasis
- 3+ years of industry or research-lab experience applying ML in experimental or simulation-driven scientific work
- Expertise in physics-informed or physics-constrained ML, including surrogate or reduced-order models
- Experience integrating ML with scientific-computing workflows, simulations or diagnostics
- Scripting proficiency in MATLAB, Python or similar for parsing, analysis and visualization
- Familiarity with magnetic diffusion, circuit coupling or plasma-dynamics modeling in pulsed-power or electromagnetic systems
Nice to have
- Fortran or HPC exposure
Pay & benefits
USD 210k–250k + equity. Medical, dental and vision plans for families, 31 days of PTO, 10 paid holidays plus a winter break, up to 5% employer 401(k) match, disability and life insurance, up to 16 weeks of parental leave, a wellness stipend, and equity.
