About the role
This role manages the team that builds the shared programming language, compiler and runtime foundations under a quantum scientific software stack. The team handles language design, program semantics, intermediate representations and execution frameworks used by researchers and engineers across the company. The lead combines people management with hands-on technical direction.
What you'll do
- Hire, mentor and give feedback to engineers on the infrastructure team and set priorities that balance core work with partner-team needs.
- Set technical direction for language abstractions, intermediate representations, compiler interfaces and shared execution infrastructure.
- Guide language and compiler design with explicit semantics and sound correctness reasoning, while contributing to design and code reviews.
- Work with research and engineering teams to find reusable abstractions and support adoption through documentation, tooling and stable interfaces.
- Own testing, performance, maintainability, compatibility and migration planning for the infrastructure.
- Stay engaged in implementation and debugging on critical engineering work.
Requirements
- Experience managing or leading a technically strong software team, including mentoring, prioritization and delivery.
- Deep practical expertise in compiler engineering and language design, including IRs, analyses, transformations and extensible compiler architectures.
- Strong grounding in program semantics, type systems, formal methods or related theory applied to engineering decisions.
- Track record of delivering substantial compiler, language, runtime or developer infrastructure used by other engineers or researchers.
- Strong software engineering skills and the ability to remain hands-on in implementation, debugging and review.
Nice to have
- Substantial open-source contributions to compiler, language or runtime projects such as LLVM/MLIR, Rust or CPython.
- Experience with domain-specific languages, staged programming or meta-programming.
- Background in type systems, abstract interpretation or formal verification.
- Proficiency in Rust and Python across multi-language infrastructure.
- Scientific computing, hardware compilation or quantum software experience.
Pay & benefits
