About the role
This role supports the physicists who build and operate neutral-atom quantum computers by maintaining the domain-specific language and compiler stack they use daily. The engineer works with physicists and control stack engineers to turn new experiments into working programs. The role suits someone who enjoys building tools and helping scientists succeed with them.
What you'll do
- Maintain the domain-specific language and its compilation stack, including triaging issues, fixing bugs, reviewing pull requests, managing releases and keeping CI healthy.
- Serve as the contact for machine and testbed teams, helping them build experiments, port legacy programs and diagnose compile or runtime problems.
- Work with control stack engineers on the program representation passed between compiler and control system, keeping both in sync across releases.
- Reduce user problems to minimal reproductions, regression tests and focused fixes, and collaborate with the compiler team on larger language changes.
- Find and fix performance problems in compile time, program size and timing correctness.
- Write documentation, tutorials and example programs, and gather user feedback into a prioritized usability roadmap.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, physics, electrical engineering or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Strong Python skills, including type hints, packaging and pytest.
- Enjoyment of building tools for scientists who are not professional software developers, with clear written and verbal communication.
- Experience working across team boundaries on interfaces and cross-system debugging.
- Experience debugging unfamiliar code and reducing failures to minimal reproductions.
- Familiarity with the software lifecycle: version control, code review, testing, CI/CD, profiling and documentation.
Nice to have
- Experience with compilers, domain-specific languages or SSA-based intermediate representations, including MLIR or LLVM.
- Background in atomic physics lab control such as AWGs, AOMs/AODs, DDS, timing systems and cameras.
- Experience with real-time or embedded control, FPGAs, or frameworks such as ARTIQ or Labscript.
- Experience with real-time scheduling or instruction-dispatch systems.
- Experience with C++ or Rust, open-source contributions, or AI coding agents in development.

Visa path
Engineers working on quantum compilers and toolchains often support an O-1A case with evidence such as open-source contributions, publications, original technical contributions, and a salary that is high relative to the field. The posting states no citizenship restriction. An employer like this or a U.S. agent can file the petition, and approval depends on the individual's evidence.
