About the role

This principal scientist leads development of RF pre-ionization, the plasma startup method for the company's field-reversed configuration fusion generators. The work covers strategy, hardware and experiments, taking RF startup from an experimental concept to a reliable platform capability. The role reports to the director of plasma and nuclear science and helps shape the long-term technical roadmap.

What you'll do

  • Own the development of RF pre-ionization for plasma startup, from concept and experimental design through validation and performance improvement
  • Lead hands-on work on RF hardware, antenna and coupling design, diagnostics and operating procedures
  • Optimize RF plasma sources to reach target density, stability and coupling efficiency
  • Define the diagnostic approach for characterizing RF-driven plasma formation and startup performance
  • Bring together input from plasma physics, controls, machine operations, electrical engineering and data science
  • Work with technical leadership on roadmap planning and new startup concepts for future machines

Requirements

  • PhD in physics, plasma physics, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related field relevant to RF plasma systems or fusion experiments
  • 10+ years in advanced lab or R&D settings, with substantial hands-on work on plasma generation, RF hardware and vacuum systems
  • Deep expertise in RF plasma sources, antenna and coupling design, or RF-plasma interactions
  • Strong plasma diagnostics background, including evaluating density, temperature, stability, coupling and current
  • Proven record of independently leading complex experimental programs from concept to validation
  • Recognized subject matter expertise in RF-assisted startup, pre-ionization or fusion-enabling hardware

Nice to have

    Pay & benefits
