About the role
This role applies physics-informed machine learning to speed up modeling of field-reversed configuration plasmas. The scientist builds and validates models that combine simulation tools with experimental diagnostic data, so results can inform experiment design and interpretation. It reports to the experimental science manager and works alongside plasma physics and pulsed-power experts.
What you'll do
- Build and validate machine-learning frameworks for field-reversed configuration plasma dynamics, using differentiable physics, PINNs, surrogate models or hybrid approaches
- Connect ML models to existing simulation tools and experimental diagnostic pipelines
- Reproduce experimental plasma conditions in ML workflows to help interpret magnetic diffusion, circuit response and diagnostic measurements
- Write analysis scripts to post-process model output and visualize how predictions compare with experiments
- Work with plasma physics, pulsed-power and transient-magnetics experts to raise model fidelity
- Present results through reports, talks and technical visualizations
Requirements
- PhD in physics, engineering, applied math, computational science, machine learning or a related field with a physics-grounded modeling emphasis
- 10+ years of industry or research-lab experience applying ML in experimental or simulation-driven scientific work
- Expertise in physics-informed or physics-constrained ML such as differentiable physics, PINNs, surrogate models or reduced-order models
- Experience integrating ML with scientific-computing workflows, simulation tools or experimental diagnostics
- Scripting proficiency for data parsing, analysis and visualization in MATLAB, Python or similar
- Familiarity with magnetic diffusion, circuit coupling or plasma-dynamics modeling in pulsed-power or electromagnetic systems

Pay & benefits
